<p>I use and have used Fedora for many years, I couldn't even remember what the first version I installed was. It was Fedora Core back then, I'm sure. </p>
<p>I love that it is bleeding edge but it is too stable these days. So today when I saw Linus had released the first release candidate for version 7 of the kernel I thought, <em>yes!</em> I want to try it now.</p>
<p>Having a quick google, i stumbled across a <a href="https://docs.pagure.org/copr.copr/user_documentation.html#faq" target="_blank" class="extlink extlink-icon-11" rel="noopener noreferrer"> copr</a> repository.</p>
<figure class="post__image post__image--center"><img loading="lazy" src="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-07-39.png" alt="" width="1336" height="809" sizes="(min-width: 1500px) calc(7.87vw + 610px), (min-width: 900px) calc(44.48vw + 68px), (min-width: 780px) calc(8vw + 604px), calc(84.35vw + 23px)" srcset="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-07-39-xs.png 300w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-07-39-sm.png 480w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-07-39-md.png 768w"></figure>
<p><a href="https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/g/kernel-vanilla/next/" target="_blank" class="extlink extlink-icon-11" rel="noopener noreferrer">@Kernel-Vanilla/next</a> offers bleeding edge kernels for multiple versions of Fedora. Installing is easy. If you are running Fedora 42, 43, 44 or Rawhide and you like risk, the instructions are as follows;  </p>
<p>To start with, we need to add the repo, </p>
<pre class="language-bash line-numbers"><code>sudo dnf -y copr enable @kernel-vanilla/next</code></pre>
<figure class="post__image post__image--center"> <img loading="lazy" src="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-12-59.png" alt="" width="1384" height="830" sizes="(min-width: 1500px) calc(7.87vw + 610px), (min-width: 900px) calc(44.48vw + 68px), (min-width: 780px) calc(8vw + 604px), calc(84.35vw + 23px)" srcset="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-12-59-xs.png 300w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-12-59-sm.png 480w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-12-59-md.png 768w"></figure>
<p>Then,<em> simply update</em>.</p>
<pre class="language-bash line-numbers"><code>sudo dnf update</code></pre>
<figure class="post__image post__image--center"><img loading="lazy" src="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-14-54.png" alt="" width="1384" height="830" sizes="(min-width: 1500px) calc(7.87vw + 610px), (min-width: 900px) calc(44.48vw + 68px), (min-width: 780px) calc(8vw + 604px), calc(84.35vw + 23px)" srcset="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-14-54-xs.png 300w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-14-54-sm.png 480w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-14-54-md.png 768w"></figure>
<p>Once you reboot, and the kernel avoids a panic, you should have kernel 7 installed. </p>
<figure class="post__image post__image--center"><img loading="lazy" src="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-26-02.png" alt="" width="1384" height="830" sizes="(min-width: 1500px) calc(7.87vw + 610px), (min-width: 900px) calc(44.48vw + 68px), (min-width: 780px) calc(8vw + 604px), calc(84.35vw + 23px)" srcset="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-26-02-xs.png 300w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-26-02-sm.png 480w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/6/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-24-23-26-02-md.png 768w"></figure>
<p>Now, you try this at your own risk. It works for me <em>but it is</em> a release candidate. </p>

<p>That, is my web server. It was a <a href="https://www.pfsense.org/" target="_blank" class="extlink extlink-icon-11" rel="noopener noreferrer">pfsense</a> router until I got some faster internet and it wasn't able to keep up. Instead of throwing it away, I wanted to find a use for it. </p>
<p><em>//blogging....</em> 🤔</p>
<p>So, I have for the first time in my life way more bandwidth than I can use. We have gone from this,</p>
<figure class="post__image post__image--center"><img loading="lazy" src="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/4/before-speed-safe.png" alt="" width="752" height="366" sizes="(min-width: 1500px) calc(7.87vw + 610px), (min-width: 900px) calc(44.48vw + 68px), (min-width: 780px) calc(8vw + 604px), calc(84.35vw + 23px)" srcset="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/4/responsive/before-speed-safe-xs.png 300w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/4/responsive/before-speed-safe-sm.png 480w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/4/responsive/before-speed-safe-md.png 768w"></figure>
<p>To this... </p>
<figure class="post__image post__image--center"><img loading="lazy" src="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/4/after-speed-safe.png" alt="" width="721" height="400" sizes="(min-width: 1500px) calc(7.87vw + 610px), (min-width: 900px) calc(44.48vw + 68px), (min-width: 780px) calc(8vw + 604px), calc(84.35vw + 23px)" srcset="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/4/responsive/after-speed-safe-xs.png 300w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/4/responsive/after-speed-safe-sm.png 480w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/4/responsive/after-speed-safe-md.png 768w"></figure>
<p>I won't talk about the issues with the old internet, but I'm sure you know it simply wasn't good enough for a family of four. </p>
<p>So as already disclosed, the old firewall simply didn't allow the full speed of the new connection. A new router was needed and with the current prices of memory the best and most cost effective solution was a <a href="https://uk.store.ui.com/uk/en/category/cloud-gateways-compact/collections/cloud-gateway-fiber/products/ucg-fiber" target="_blank" class="extlink extlink-icon-11" rel="noopener noreferrer">Cloud Gateway Fibre</a> from <a href="https://ui.com/" target="_blank" class="extlink extlink-icon-11" rel="noopener noreferrer">UniFi</a>. A great piece of kit for the money. </p>
<figure class="post__image post__image--center"><img loading="lazy" src="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/4/Screenshot-From-2026-02-23-20-40-51.png" alt="" width="902" height="551" sizes="(min-width: 1500px) calc(7.87vw + 610px), (min-width: 900px) calc(44.48vw + 68px), (min-width: 780px) calc(8vw + 604px), calc(84.35vw + 23px)" srcset="https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/4/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-23-20-40-51-xs.png 300w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/4/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-23-20-40-51-sm.png 480w ,https://www.yeok.org/media/posts/4/responsive/Screenshot-From-2026-02-23-20-40-51-md.png 768w"></figure>
<p><em>Anyway,</em> the little firewall was converted to a Fedora web server. It isn't fast enough for a database, or a lot of hits so it is hidden behind Cloudflare's services. Cached, and only serving static content. </p>
<p>The httpd server is Apache, I use Publii to make the site and shout out to them, it's pretty good. </p>
<p>So, if you have a little low powered computer and you are wondering if it can serve web pages, yes it can. Cloudflare offer the service for free to the little guys like us. Simply sign up, point your name servers to Cloudflare, install the tunnel application on the server and off you go. A public facing web server with no open ports, no public IP address and as a bonus, Cloudflare even add SSL to your site! </p>
